Project
Grani antichi
The project Grani antichi“valoris historical varieties of wheat, in particular San Pastore and Senatore Cappelli, through experimental activities conducted at Fondazione Riccagioia 5.0. The initiative combines biodiversity, agricultural research, and innovation, observing the behavior of the varieties in the field and analyzing their potential in relation to the needs of contemporary agriculture.
Goal
Collect agronomic and production data to understand how the genetic heritage grani antichi can be integrated into modern, sustainable agricultural systems that respect biodiversity.
laboratory
Research in the field
The laboratory of the project is the field experiment at Riccagioia 5.0, where the following are monitored:
- phases of the crop cycle;
- physiology, vegetative development and morphology;
- sprouting and maturation;
- response to local pedoclimatic conditions;
- production parameters detected during harvesting.
solutions
Biodiversity for the future
The project offers cognitive and operational solutions for the agricultural sector:
- experimental data useful for the agronomic evaluation of historical varieties;
- elements to integrate into grani antichi modern production lines;
- tools for the conservation of biodiversity;
- observational methodologies and data collection that can be replicated in other agricultural settings;
- Support for varietal research and the selection of resilient genotypes.
The expected and partially already observed results include:
- detailed description of the agronomic behavior of San Pastore and Senatore Cappelli;
- evaluation of their adaptability to the pedoclimatic conditions of the Oltrepò;
- production of data useful for research and dissemination;
- strengthening the role of Riccagioia 5.0 as an Innovation Hub for Agritech;
- contribution to the conservation of cereal biodiversity.
Associated partners

Riccagioia Foundation 5.0
Promoter and location of the experiment. Coordinates the activities, provides the infrastructure, and integrates the results within its role as Innovation Hub for Agritech and Foodtech.
